Assessment Training Program: Module 1

Foundations and the Art of Using the Scales Module 1 establishes the knowledge and skills required to conduct effective developmental assessments using the C.H.I.L.D. Protocol®. Participants are introduced to the purpose, structure, and theoretical grounding of the developmental scales, with a strong emphasis on translating scientific theory into practical application. The module presents a structured, repeatable assessment process that supports consistency, accuracy, and reflective practice. Key instructional components include an overview of the protocol’s contribution to developmental neuropsychology, a detailed explanation of the 23 developmental scales organized by age and domain, and explicit training in objective, unbiased observation. Drawing inspiration from Montessori principles, participants learn to observe children within natural contexts using systematic documentation techniques that minimize observer bias. Practice-based activities and guided reflection reinforce skill development and promote thoughtful application in real-world settings. Expected Learning Outcomes By the end of Module 1, participants will be able to:

1. Apply the C.H.I.L.D. Protocol® step-by-step assessment process to observe, document, and interpret developmental behaviors across domains.
2. Utilize principles of objective, unbiased observation in naturalistic settings to ensure accurate documentation of child actions and behaviors.
3. Analyze observed behaviors using the structure of the developmental scales to identify age-appropriate patterns and variations.
4. Evaluate the quality, completeness, and reliability of observational data collected through practice activities and video exercises.
5. Reflect on observational practice to identify areas for improvement and to plan for the effective integration of assessment skills in professional or personal contexts.
